Having a go at fashion

NEW IN TOWN Seven designers launched their collection recently to add to the fashion spread this season. MADHUMITHA SRINIVASAN

Come Diwali, and we are spoilt for choice, be it fireworks, sweets, programmes on TV or, most importantly, clothes. Adding to our confusion this festive season were seven designers from Chennai who launched their own collection under a common brand name — Go Glam!, at Vimonisha Gallery.

Together for fashion

Anitha Pandian, Jyothi Rajai, Meeta Chablani, Rashmi, Sahasra Srinivas, Shanti Dheeraj and Shanti Partasarathi vented out their creativity at the launch with colourful clothes, accessories and bags that were a mix of mostly ethnic salwars, tunics, along with a few urban tops and skirts. While five of them are graduates from the Institute of Design, Jyothi and Shanti studied fashion at Loyola and Milan respectively. As always is the trend around this time, silks, brocades, tissues and chiffons were the dominant fabrics. Twenty-seven-year old Sahasra Srinivas’ ‘SahasrĂ©’ collection was what she described as “challengingly simple”. Challenging because her style is to work on complicated designs like her Banjara tribal-inspired salwar that was a loud fusion of colour panels decorated with metallic accessories around the neckline. So trying to keep her work simple keeping her consumers in mind was a real challenge.

“You cannot generalise style. It’s about you and what you want to carry off. But tunics are big this time,” says Sahasra, also a designer for Pothys. Meanwhile it was evident that Anita Devi had a special corner for silk. Right from wearing a silk kurta to featuring a lot of the material in her collection, her line was graceful and elegant. Anita says that all one needs is passion. Shanti Partasarathi agrees. She joined the course at IOD at the insistence of her husband who didn’t want her to while away her time at home. And her journey has led her here, to the launch of her collection Mulberry. Her work also featured hand-painted half-silk sarees. “Festive Candy’, the colourful, fun collection from Meeta Chablani is what she describes as “something you can just pick up, wear and walk out”. Her collection featured a lot of breezy chiffon and cotton tops, because she was quite tired of kurtis herself and so are the consumers, she feels.

Traditional twist

Shanti Dheeraj, 27, who shifted track from a B.Sc in Computer Science to a Masters in Textile Designing, featured her youthful collection ‘La Stilista’ at the launch. A part of her collection was bling-bling party wear, while the other was tunics, something that she specialises in. But her tunics didn’t sport the regular look. They had dupattas stitched in along with the fabric, or would be paired with a poncho. Even her accessories were a blend of fabric revealing her love for materials. Rashmi, 24, also had added a unique element to her kurta — a zipper, defining her Indo-western collection. And lastly, it was Jyothi’s turn. This 24-year-old has a resume that runs to pages. She has worked on the clothes of a participant of Miss Chennai in 2006, followed by a stint in films with “Jillunu oru kadhal”, where she designed actor Suganya’s clothes.

After garnering experience as a fashion merchandiser in Ambattur Clothing Ltd., she is now here launching her own collection — “Style Icon”. Jyothi, who is also a designer for Cuffs and Collars and concept seeker for Simran Collections, suggests going light on the choice of clothes and jazz the look up with heavy jewellery. The jewellery, gold-plated with kundan stones, silver pieces and hand-painted ones were available at her stall itself, sourced from Sri Sri Ravishankar’s ashram in Bangalore.
